After spending the last 4 years of my life to obtain this piece of paper called degree (you guessed it - I’m an engineer, like the rest of 99.97% Indian males), I flew to Bali in the June of 2017 from the ultra-chaotic city that New Delhi is, and it’s been... read more an amazing journey to say the least.
However, things were pretty different back when I started college. I chose to be an engineer not because of any kind of parental pressure or society norms or simply because it was the default option, but because I had always been a kid who was fascinated by computers and arts, and hence it was a no-brainer.
I started working as a freelance graphic designer in the first year of college, taking up small jobs online and working on my MacBook purchased by my dad on credit card instalments. I was getting paid $20 for posters, flyer designs, etc. It was so hard to believe that I was getting paid to do something that I really enjoyed doing. And that was the first taste of removing financial dependency on my parents, to some extent.
By second year, I had transitioned to being a web developer and designer and since then, I’ve worked with some amazing individuals and companies across the world, on projects that I could have never dreamt of.
Came fourth year and I was surrounded in the jargon of “placements”, “job security”, “mass recruiters”, “infosys”, "packages", etc. I knew this wasn’t for me - it just didn’t feel right and I started to question the whole idea of following this system.
This system - that demands 8 hours of our day in a place we don’t like, with people we don’t resonate, doing stuff we don’t enjoy, for people we don’t care, to earn a few bucks to survive?
I went on to build a software development company based in New Delhi.
Lately, I have been getting a lot of questions, such as - How did I start my career? What are the various ways to earn money online and travel? How to escape the 9 to 5 job routine as an Indian? And some more specific questions about getting started as a freelancer web developer, etc.
It sucks being lost and having no one to answer your questions. Hell, I’ve been there myself not too long ago. I try my best to get back to each of the questions individually. Always remember that life is gift. By following the “society” and getting stuck in the rat race, none of us can achieve our true potential. Find the courage to follow your dreams. You already have all the power inside you.
It's 2017, and our work is changing. We don't need to sit in a boring cubicle all day long just so we could earn enough to pay for our survival. Instead, we could be working from anywhere in the world, only with a laptop and internet.
In all these years, I realized that there is so much information about the subject scattered on the internet which is either misleading, or a scam, or just doesn't work. After trying tonnes of stuff, I’m putting down everything that I’ve been doing myself to successfully earn money on the internet - from stock markets to freelance web designing to affiliate marketing, and more. No bullshit, only what works.
